No sooner do I venture a post about Apple's AirDrop than there's a spate of new articles on the web implying possible security breaches with the feature, such as this one from Mashable. I don't have the expertise to evaluate the competing claims, but I felt I should pass it along.

BjörnH: "Nothing to really worry about. What can happen is that when you open the share menu on your phone, it will emit an encrypted (or close enough) version of your email address and phone number over Bluetooth. This is so the receiver can determine if you are a known contact. Problem is that it is almost trivial to guess the original data. This boils down to that your phone will leak this information to anyone close by, if the listener is inclined to reverse the 'encryption.'"
