Just published! Signed copies of Peter Turnley's newest book are now available for pre-order. A New York – Paris Visual Diary: The Human Face of COVID-19 is a deluxe softcover with 60 images from each of the two cities, 120 total.
The book is a testament to our shared humanity in the face of difficulty, a reflection of both trouble and hope.
You can also order the book with a limited-edition, signed, silver gelatin 8x10-inch print included. You can choose one of these three pictures:
I apologize if anyone misses the print opportunity; given the size of Peter's Facebook following these are going to go quickly.
I'll have more once I get to see the book. It's exceptionally strong work, and an exquisitely judged, finely balanced, well-paced set. There really isn't a weak picture in the book.
Ahead of time
TOP is off tomorrow, so please come back for a new essay (which I've actually written in advance for once!) mid-day Sunday.
May you have a good and restful weekend, and a safe and healthy one. If you happen to be any kind of health care worker, special gratitude to you.
Mike

Albert Smith: "Wow, this is great. CBS Sunday Morning had a segment on this project some time back, which led me to the web to see more photos. But I'm old school (or just old) and prefer actual, tangible photos between covers that can't disappear on the whim of who ever is hosting them online. Thanks for bringing this news to us."
One of the two Dutch newspapers I read had a special on these images. Hopefully this link gives you access to the article.

Fantastic. Is this the same COVID that 30 or 40 million Americans believe is a non-existent hoax? I suppose they won't be buying Peter's book...

Ordered.
Damn. I told myself I wouldn’t buy any more photo books, but I had to have this as a memento of the year that wasn’t.

These are remarkable, moving images and I’ll probably buy the book. But while I greatly admire Peter and his work, I can’t help but think there was an opportunity missed here. On his site I had hoped to see that some of the proceeds would be donated to help the cause, and sadly that does not seem to be the case.
