I've received an unprecedented amount of requests for comments about David Douglas Duncan, 1916–2018, who died at age 102 on June 7th, in Grasse, France. Like many of us I have a lot of "off the top of my head" anecdotes swimming in my thoughts, but I don't feel I have a very good handle on him. He's important for a number of different, disparate accomplishments and he isn't easy to categorize. Just wanted to mention that I'm working on an obituary and my temporary silence isn't neglect or disrespect. Here's one of several obituaries published elsewhere.

There was an excellent exhibition of his work, including an interesting film he made, at the Picasso Museum in Antibes, during the summer of 2015. Of course Grasse is quite near to Antibes, (take the train), and his relationship with Picasso is most interesting.

When studying photojournalism in the early 70's, I discovered DDD's work. I was gobsmacked by the raw power and intimacy of the photos. During my thirty-nine years of newspaper photojournalism, I often asked myself if I could come even within a mile of the effect his photos had upon me..... perhaps once or twice was the answer.

Just sad to hear of great Photographers, and grand old men, along with some grand women like Ellen Mark, passing away. People I have followed for decades and learned from.

Looking forward to another Leica special edition. You can never have too many of those, right?
