I realized that in our posts about Mary Ellen Mark the other day—this one about her death last week and the follow-up—we published only two of Ralph Gibson's early, romanticized portraits of her. Fine photographs, but not the Mary Ellen Mark many would most easily recognize. So I went looking for a more recent photograph by someone who knew her.
Mary Ellen Mark by Joni Kabana (republished with permission)
After quite a bit of searching I found some loose and wonderful portraits by Joni Kabana. Degreed in psychology, Joni is a teacher and photographer who has recently worked in places such as Nepal and Ethiopia. And as it happens she was just interviewed about her friendship with Mary Ellen on Oregon Public Broadcasting.
You can see more of her photographs of Mary Ellen Mark at Joni's website here.

Hmm. I have photographs of all of these except: Slot Canyons, Iceland & Naked Women in High Heels and Low Earrings. Perhaps my exercise in original use of the cliche could be Naked Icelandic Women in Slot Canyons.
Or I could photograph a cat, creatively.
