David Aschkenas is about to begin working on a book of jazz musicians in Pittsburgh with Abby Mendelson, so he's put up a few vintage photos of blues greats from the '70s and '80s on his website to get the juices flowing.
I conceive of David Aschkenas as a "David Douglas Duncan type" of photographer: "shoot anything but keep shooting." He's surprisingly successful at genre-jumping, usually a hazard for photographers. Some of his portraits are especially wonderful. ...Although I really feel the lack of captions! I want to know who all those people are, and I only recognize a few.
The picture above is Texas blues guitar virtuoso Stevie Ray Vaughan, who was killed in a helicopter crash in 1990 not far from where I live in Wisconsin.
A nice quote from David A.: "I consider all work personal; after all, I'm the one who gets to press the shutter."
