David Aschkenas is about to begin working on a book of jazz musicians in Pittsburgh with Abby Mendelson, so he's put up a few vintage photos of blues greats from the '70s and '80s on his website to get the juices flowing.
I conceive of David Aschkenas as a "David Douglas Duncan type" of photographer: "shoot anything but keep shooting." He's surprisingly successful at genre-jumping, usually a hazard for photographers. Some of his portraits are especially wonderful. ...Although I really feel the lack of captions! I want to know who all those people are, and I only recognize a few.
The picture above is Texas blues guitar virtuoso Stevie Ray Vaughan, who was killed in a helicopter crash in 1990 not far from where I live in Wisconsin.
A nice quote from David A.: "I consider all work personal; after all, I'm the one who gets to press the shutter."

R. A. Krajnyak: "Thanks for the heads up. Nice images. As for the folks in the blues pics, I'm sure you recognize B.B. and Albert King. The woman accordion player is Zydeco musician Queen Ida. The bearded guitarist is Dr. John and the guitarist playing the resonator is a young John Hammond Jr. Thanks again."
Mike replies: John Hammond! That was driving me crazy. Thanks.
Here's another thank you for this.
