Perhaps it just relates to what I've always done for a living, but I have this strong sense of photo-geeks of every description and stripe being a community of equals and friends. We are young and old, male and female, rich and poor, and we stretch from the greenest newcomer to the greatly accomplished, but we are connected by the filaments of our common interest. (It's why, for instance, I have a policy of referring to everyone by their first names even if they're far from me in social standing or accomplishment or job position. Elsewhere, they could well be Ms. of Mr.; here, we're friends.)
Hugh Mangum died way too young, at age 44, of the flu. (Had your flu shot yet?) But somehow I just know that if he were around today he'd be hanging out here, or on RFF, or the LUG, or on dpreview, and he'd be posting his portraits to a flickr group and getting lots of likes. Another one of us.

Check out the nice piece CBS News did about Hugh and his portraits. A short life, sadly, but there are worse lives. I enjoyed shaking hands with Hugh. Maybe you will too.

FYI, the NY Times had an article on Hugh Mangum back in August in its LENS blog.

Thanks for the heads up on Hugh Mangum.
My family is from the NC area and this is an interesting window into life during those troubled years in the South
