Sorry to say, TOP will be on hiatus next week, between Monday morning's "Book of the Week" post and the following Sunday, April 17th.
Nothing dire or portentous; I just have to (reluctantly) put down the can opener while I pay taxes and take care of some other personal logistical issues.
—Mike, Overworked TOP World Headquarters Head Housekeeper and Sole Staff
Well, Mike, we Brits aren't the sort to rub it in (much), but I'll leave it to you - would you imagine that good King George's filing requirements were (a) more onerous, or, (b) a sweet, level walk in the park compared to those of the IRS?
I used to work for a major international accountancy firm in London that hired three (very nice but permanently nerve-shredded) Americans to do nothing but file returns for ex-pat executives of client companies. Even then, it seemed to me a peculiarly cruel and unusual punishment to make a fiscal tooth extraction (sorry!) even more painful than even Heinrich Himmler might have thought necessary..
