That's no vegetable; it's obviously a large snake attempting to digest a pig.

Godzilla is not far away anymore.....

Nessie lives!!

Funny you put the picture of the black swan there (presumably your association?). My first thought was mutant vegetable snake!
In any case, definitely an alarming vegetable...

You should have bought it and started a series of gourd photos a la Weston and his peppers.

(I also couldn't help but notice the photo has a 4:3 format ... nice!) ;-)

And I see a snake!!

Off with its head!

Then pierce body with fork numerous times.

Cook on a metal tray in medium oven until
outer skin is soft.

Remove from oven, peel outer skin, remove inner seeds...eat meat with a bit of butter and brown sugar.

Freeze balance in zip lock bag

Richard,
Enlarge the picture (by clicking on it) and look at the little sign on the left. I think you can make it out.

Are you familiar with 'The Day of the Triffids' ?

The book cover in the sidebar of the Wikipedia page shows a triffid that bears an uncanny resemblance to your gourd.

Where did you say you saw it?

"Man-eating plant" was my first thought.

Actually, Weston made at least one photo of these gourds, it's in a small Phaidon book I have.

How about Nessie the swan?

I once bought an eggplant that had some extra material that that ran partway down down one side and then protruded out. Viewed in "profile," was a dead ringer for Oliphant's caricatures of Richard Nixon.

P.S. It was delicious.
