A device that lets a camera take pictures with 100 times the resolution of the most advanced models on the market is poised to revolutionise amateur photography.
The Gigapan allows people to take pictures which are more than a gigapixel—or 1,000 megapixels—in size, effectively turning a single photograph into a panoramic experience, around which the viewer can navigate on a computer.

yeah it's possible to get real high resolution like this and you don't need any special hardware or 100 frames either but for me at least in the field I can only compose one frame at a time so I never end up doing this. Also the free Canon software I had left really obvious seams and blurring. It was quick and easy though.

I think you don't need a robot - just a nice tripod and a panorama head. It's really easy but doesn't work automatically, though.
