What is so important about this camera?

I think this is a horizontal only camera (at least that is in my mind and hence I ignore them, when I look for my 8x10 camera a couple of years ago).

But I agree the e-bay picture look quite nice.

I love his science fiction writing, too.

That's just a protector plate velcroed to the back, right? (For a second I thought it might be the ground glass, and then immediately thought about precision of positioning and such. But it doesn't look like ground glass, either.)

I wonder why it has a hole in the middle?
